About SIH:
Steelers In
Hoboken was founded in 2000 by Pittsburgh natives Benjamin Stern and David
Kovscek.
Ben and Dave were roommates in Hoboken, and like many of us that live in
towns outside of Pittsburgh, they were tired of watching Steelers games from
the most remote corners of the local sports bars.
So, what did they do?? They dedicated their time to finding a bar that
would commit to showing the Steelers game every week - on a BIG TV - with
SOUND. When the Liberty Bar expressed interest, all Ben and Dave had
to do was guarantee them 10-15 Steelers fans per week. Ben and Dave
figured there were lots of Steelers fans in the area, but they had no idea
they were creating an avalanche of sorts. I guess it was like Field of
Dreams: "If you build it, they will come", because word started to get
around that the Liberty Bar was a Steelers bar! The Polka blared every
time we scored, you could hear chants of "Cleveland Sucks!" from the other
side of town. Heck, people that had never met were high-fiving and
even hugging with each score. What started out as a small but loyal
weekly gathering grew to a sweltering crowd of forty plus by the end of the
season!
Steelers In Hoboken was for real!
Before the second season, our yinzers, Ben and Dave decided to get smart and
both took off for business school.
Two of their faithful recruits, Matt Logan – who served as club president
from 2001-2007 - and "Mean" Rob Mancini, took over. Plastering the
town with flyers and spreading word of mouth, Stiller fans came from
everywhere to join the crowds at the Liberty Bar! Total membership hit
the 200 mark, with crowds over 100 for the playoffs games! What a season!
(Darn those Patriots!)
Now in 2009, our TENTH season, we're BIGGER THAN EVER! Having moved to a
larger and more practical location - Texas Arizona in 2004 - we thank Jimmy
(Proprietor) and Randy (GM) of T&A and his staff, who have graciously hosted
every single Steelers game for the last five seasons. In fact, we have
grown so much that even the spacious T&A is bulging to capacity by game
time.
When this occurs, we send our overflow patrons to one of several satellite
bars in the immediate area.
Steelers in Hoboken is also more than just a mob of fans watching the game
every week.
S.I.H. has grown into a legitimate fan club. We proudly hang our
banner at Heinz Field when our members make the pilgrimage several times a
year. We have an official myspace page:
www.myspace.com/steelersinhoboken. We crash the NFL Draft.
We tailgate at the Meadowlands when the Steelers come to beat up on the
Giants or Jets. Transcending football games altogether, S.I.H. (a 100%
non-profit organization) pledges to raise money for charity every season.
As a rule, it's a ‘Burgh-based charity in which a Steeler, past or present,
is directly involved. Don't forget the annual Christmas Party, hosted
by Steelers Santa! He comes every year and bears Black and Gold gifts
for everyone! So come on down and join our local Steelers family!
Anyone and everyone is welcome - unless, of course, you're from Cleveland.
Here we go, Steelers, here we go!
